Slept in the cargo van last night. The temperature right now is pretty nice.

It’s so windy. It’s also really hot. Mexico is really beautiful. Everything in Texas is pokey.

I hate Texas. Not only does it want to kill you, but it blows sand in your face constantly. Closed Canyon is really nice though.

Collected willow all day. Yucca. Soon we weave baskets.
21:50

101115
New sleeping bag, so warm. Breakfast took forever to make. Hiked through the Gila River. Then a dip in the “natural” hot springs.
22:21

101215
I am sick. The group has banned me from camp right now.

That 2 hour nap was great this morning. Weaved a basket. It took all day and also all your energy.
22:44

101315
Olla. Washed laundry in the river.
21:24

101415
6 hours into archiving. Animals outside of my tent right now. Maybe I should make some noise? I think they left. I have been eaten alive by mosquitos. I just heard Clark talk loudly to the animals outside of our campsite. I’m still getting bitten by mosquitos.

So I’m in the cargo van. This is where I’m sleeping tonight. Today was pretty hectic but everything got done.  Tomorrow we leave the Gila Wilderness and head down to Texas.

Somewhere during this time I carved ear plugs (“gauges”) out of wood, swung on a swing that was hung over 6 feet off the ground, ate food with my hands from an “earth oven,” and ran down a hill at full speed, with my face painted, and flying a kite.

The cabin kept me warm last night. Walmart shopping. Fleece blankets. Leave the western world behind.
23:07

0902315
So warm last night, thank you fleece blanket. Uranium mines.
22:10

092415
Coal mines. Collect the coal… it has uranium?
23:28

092515
Fracking. Positive graffiti. Look left – beautiful sunset over Shiprock. Look right – clouds of smoke puffing up from the coal mine.

Find the lake. Set your tent up by the lake. Leave your rainfly off to look at the stars tonight.
22:24

P.S. I just fell onto my tent and broke the tent polls.
22:30

091815
I put on all of the warmest clothes I could find to survive the night. I am still so cold. The lake is nice. I caught a fish with my hands. Tea party in the middle of the lake. I am so sunburned. The lake is nice, though.
22:39

091915
Yoga is great. Shade shelter is built, but the sun has hid. Collecting yellow rocks.
“REFLECT”

092015
Walk. Ask Permission. Find 3 objects. Play with space. Find willow. Fix tent.
23:15

092115
Birthday. Still, very cold nights. The brownie solidified when trying to eat it. Sleeping in the cabin tonight.

Land Arts of the American West (LAAW) is an interdisciplinary field-based studio art program at the University of New Mexico that engages with the ecology of place across the American West. This is a trailer of what we have done to draw attention to the the Gila River Diversion. The Gila River as been home to us for the past week. We walked the rivers and enjoyed all that is accompanied within and around it. Collecting local willow that is freely growing by the banks and sotol that spreads widely across the hills, we, together, built a structure that would be used to contain the Gila River water we have grown so close to.

Tomorrow is September. Dams are weird structures. Wal-Mart is a foreign place to me.
