In 1956, President Eisenhower detonated the first dynamite blast from the White House to start construction. Ten million tons of concrete later the dam was completed in 1964.
At the base, the dam is 300ft wide tapering towards 25ft at the top.
Bermuda grass lawn at the dams base is mowed every Thursday.
Students travel through access tunnels bored into bedrock to reach the interior of the dam.
