Perspective

My favorite painting teacher, Leon, used to tell me as my face got closer and closer to the watercolor I was working on, that paintings are not meant to be smelt.
I suppose the same goes for some sculptures.

But, he also used to tell me that it's not whether or not you make any mistakes, but what you do with them that matters.

I felt tears in my eyes upon arrival back to Albuquerque from our first trip -- so much newness and suddenly a return to the daily grind and the place where I know the most and perhaps the least. It became a week of hussle and bussle, lots of artist talks and conversations surrounding art and the impending climate change, trips to Lowe’s and late night visits with old friends and new. I waited until the last minute to pack my bags and felt totally unprepared on our launching date as we set off to Bill Gilbert’s cabin on El Vado Lake.

The lake is at the fullest that anyone who has experienced its muddy shores has seen in years. We settled into the new atmosphere with lingering Albuquerque stresses but relaxed as were greeted with a wrap-around cabin porch -- a perfect sunset viewing stage.

I came here with the intention to paint, but I also think I came here with the intention to be by myself and have an excuse to get away from the magnetic center that is base camp. So involved! Collaborative and sarcastic and socially vibrant. Snacks and no productivity. I could spend the whole day shootin’ the shit -- which makes for a fun afternoon but also, occasionally makes me miserable.

I  talked to Jenn and Kathleen Jesse, Beau  Carey and my dad (JB) and I built this thing that all four have used and come to understand. This “wengerian easel.” All four of these mentors are part of a long tradition involving  taped coroplast and plywood which allows for a small outside painting studio.

I strapped this large hulking rectangle to my back with the help of an old external frame backpack circa REI, 1980s (a small tribute to my time as an outdoor clothing specialist.) The backpack easel is much more bulky than any french easel and it makes walking under trees a brand new experience.

#findpaulasflipflops

A problem that has arisen in the world of Land Arts is the confusion between what is a ‘beautiful art piece’ and what is simply a pair of flip-flops escaping into the abyss on El Vado Lake. A crucial member of the Land Arts team turned her back on the escapee flip flops for only a minute. Unsure of the location of them, she proceeded to consult with others on the whereabouts of her flip-flops. She was informed that they were last sighted floating away from the shoreline on El Vado Lake. The question was asked, why didn’t you stop them? This was followed by the answer “it looked like you were creating a beautiful art piece”.  This blog post is an appeal aiming to reunite the lost flip-flops with our Land Arts family. If sighted you may mistake them for an art piece but you will be wrong!

If found please photograph and upload to social media with the tags

Find the lake. Set your tent up by the lake. Leave your rainfly off to look at the stars tonight.

P.S. I just fell onto my tent and broke the tent polls.

I put on all of the warmest clothes I could find to survive the night. I am still so cold. The lake is nice. I caught a fish with my hands. Tea party in the middle of the lake. I am so sunburned. The lake is nice, though.

Yoga is great. Shade shelter is built, but the sun has hid. Collecting yellow rocks.

Walk. Ask Permission. Find 3 objects. Play with space. Find willow. Fix tent.

Birthday. Still, very cold nights. The brownie solidified when trying to eat it. Sleeping in the cabin tonight.

This is the road

This is the quilt I am stitching by hand.
This is the barbed wire that marks the land of the Jicarilla Apache.
This is the road I walked for five hours
which fills the sky with dust
when the trucks carry out gigantic tree trunks

or pickup beds loaded with logs.

I think that I am beginning to master the art of finding a good tent spot. This time I have taken the time, scouted out a high spot with a view of the water and not too far from the cabin. Choosing an area that catches my eye. For the first night I slept under the stars because they were so bright and so many. But I soon went back to the warmth of my tent because it got so cold!

It is nice to be near water again and to be able to go for a quick swim before dinner. Although it is a real commitment to wade through the mud to get to the water. I always end up dirtier than before. I have spent most of my time by the water and so has most of the group. There is a small community of tents at the water’s edge. Clark, Harriet and Sarah have set up a volley ball net on the drier mud.

Ode to a Tree House

This is a child’s place, cobbled together from carefully selected scrap wood. There is no fear in the construction, these branches will hold me. My body is too large for these spaces, so I step into a smaller one and scramble from platform to platform with ease. A small child sprawls among the branches like a cat, staring at the lake. A thousand adventures started here, and a thousand more are waiting to be discovered.
